Superman vient au secours d'une mission dans le soleil qui a mal tourné (car sabotée par Lex Luthor) et, de ce fait, se retrouve surchargé de radiations, ce qui accélère la dégénérescence de ses cellules. Se rendant compte que même lui ne pourra échapper à la mort, Superman vit de nouvelles choses - révélant enfin son secret à Lois Lane, tentant de comprendre le point de vue de Lex sur l'humanité, et essayant d'assurer la sauvegarde de la Terre en vue de sa propre fin...
